Chunky passover cookies

Grandma’s Chunky Passover Cookies – Easy Matza Dessert with Cinnamon & Nuts

Jump to Recipe

There are some recipes that just live in the memory—passed down, scribbled on an index card, slightly smudged with oil, and always requested year after year. These are Grandma Sonia’s Chunky Passover Cookies, and they’re all of the above.

Soft in the middle, lightly crisp on the edges, and just the right amount of chunky—these cookies have shown up at our Seder table (and stayed for the whole week) for generations. If you think Passover desserts have to be dry, boring, or suspiciously eggy, allow Grandma Sonia and the Queen of Quick to prove you wrong.

What Makes These Queen of Quick Cookies Special

  • Hearty and textured: Thanks to a combo of matza farfel and matza meal.
  • Not-too-sweet: Perfect with tea, coffee, or straight off the cooling rack.
  • Flexible mix-ins: Go classic with raisins or go wild with chocolate chips. We support both lifestyles.
  • One-bowl easy: As all good Grandma recipes should be.

These cookies come together quickly and bake up beautifully golden in under 20 minutes. They keep well, freeze like champs, and somehow disappear faster than you’d expect. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

A Little Wellness Note: These Cookies Have Benefits, Too

While they’re certainly dessert, these cookies have a few hidden health perks worth celebrating. With ingredients like cinnamon, eggs, and chopped nuts, you’re getting more than just comfort—you’re also baking with some body-friendly basics. Here’s a quick look at the benefits through both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western nutrition perspectives:

Cinnamon, eggs and mixed nuts for passover cookies

Chinese Nutrition

  • Cinnamon (Gui Zhi) warms the body, supports digestion, and helps move Qi (energy), especially in cold or damp conditions.
  • Eggs nourish Yin and Blood, support recovery, and help build foundational energy.
  • Chopped nuts (especially walnuts and almonds) strengthen Kidney essence (Jing), support the brain, and moisten dryness in the lungs and intestines.

Western Nutrition

  • Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants and may help regulate blood sugar and reduce inflammation.
  • Eggs are a complete protein source and offer choline, essential for brain health and metabolism.
  • Chopped nuts add healthy fats, fiber, and plant-based protein—great for heart health and satiety.

So yes, these are cookies. But they’ve got a little functional magic behind their old-school charm.
